How to make a transparent GIF from a video

An animated sticker, an email signature, a little character on a website: transparent GIFs are still popular. They have real limits, though, and it's worth knowing them before you start.

Can a GIF have a transparent background?

Yes, but only on or off: each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. There's no partial transparency, so no soft edges.

The result: hair and curved outlines look jagged, sometimes with a fringe of the original background color.

Does Keyotte export GIFs?

No. Keyotte only exports an H.264 MP4 up to 1080p, with your subject on flat green #00B140.

That MP4 can be your starting point: a converter removes the green and builds the GIF. Keep it short, as GIFs get heavy fast. And since GIFs are limited to 256 colors, gradients (skin, sky) can look blotchy: that's the format, not the cutout.

How do you make a transparent GIF from a green screen video?

Trim the part you want (a few seconds), shrink it, then convert to GIF with the green set as the transparent color. Online converters and tools like FFmpeg or Photoshop can do it.

To limit the green fringe, choose a matte color close to the page where the GIF will sit, or shrink the subject's edge slightly before converting.

Which formats beat GIF?

Animated WebP and APNG keep real, gradual transparency with soft edges, and modern browsers play them. For longer clips, a transparent WebM video is far lighter.

  • GIF: plays everywhere, 256 colors, on-or-off transparency.
  • Animated WebP: gradual transparency, smaller files.
  • APNG: gradual transparency, often heavy files.
  • WebM with alpha: ideal for several seconds of video on a site.

How do you keep a GIF small?

Cut the length, the size and the frame rate. A GIF stores almost every frame in full, so it grows very quickly.

A few seconds, a modest width and a lower frame rate are often enough for a sticker or signature. If it's still too big, a video format or animated WebP is the better fit. For on-or-off versus gradual transparency, read the alpha channel explained.

What is a transparent GIF good for?

GIF is still useful where other formats don't work: some messaging apps, email signatures, older publishing tools. Elsewhere, video almost always looks better and weighs less.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my transparent GIF have white or green edges?

GIF has no partial transparency: edge pixels keep the original background color. Shrink the edge slightly or pick a matte close to where the GIF will show.

Can I post a transparent GIF to Instagram?

Instagram posts don't keep transparency. Animated stickers go through other tools.

How long should a GIF be?

A few seconds at most: beyond that the file gets very heavy.

Will Keyotte do GIFs?

Not at the moment. Keyotte gives you a green screen MP4 to convert with another tool.
