Cut out a pet or a dance video
A dog running, a cat jumping, a whole dance routine: these are some of the most shared videos, and some of the trickiest to cut out. Here's how to stack the odds in your favor.
Can you cut out a pet in a video?
Yes. You click the animal just like a person, and tracking keeps it frame by frame, fur included as far as possible. An animal that contrasts with the floor and background gives the best result.
A black cat on a black sofa will be harder than a light-colored dog on a lawn.
Why are fast movements hard?
Because fast motion leaves a blurred trail on the frame: the edges no longer really exist. The cutout has to guess where the subject ends.
The more light there is, the faster the shutter speed the camera can use, and the less blur. Film outdoors or in a very bright room. On some phones, slow motion or a higher frame rate also reduces blur per frame; set it back to normal speed in the edit if you don't want slow-mo.
How should you film a dance to cut it out?
Keep the camera still, frame the dancer head to toe with room to spare, and avoid clothes the color of the wall. Arms and feet leaving the frame disrupt the tracking.
- Camera fixed on a tripod, at chest height.
- Room above the head and below the feet.
- A clear background, with no one else dancing behind.
- Plenty of light to limit blur.
What if several people are dancing?
Click the person to keep: the others stay out. When two dancers cross, tracking can hesitate; go to that frame and click the right subject again.

Which background suits a pet or a dance?
For a dance, a simple, still background keeps the movement front and center; for a pet, a funny or unexpected backdrop is often what makes the video.
Keep the scale right: a dog placed in a scene where objects are too big or too small looks fake. Add a shadow under the feet or paws if the subject touches the ground.
What do you do with the cut-out video?
Put the pet or dancer on a new background, duplicate them, or add effects behind them in your editor. For social, keep it vertical.

Is fur cut out well?
Edges are refined frame by frame, fur and hair included. Very fine fur against a busy background is still the hardest part.
My dog leaves the frame and comes back: does that work?
Tracking may lose it on the way back. Go to the frame where it returns and click it.
Can I cut out a bird in flight?
That's a hard case: small subject, fast motion. Test it on a free preview before paying.
Is the dance music kept?
Yes, the original sound stays in the exported MP4.
