How to film for a perfect cutout

A clean cutout starts before the AI, when you hit record. A few common-sense settings make edges cleaner and tracking more reliable.

What's the most important setting for cutting out a video?

Light. A well-lit subject, lit from the front, with clear outlines, cuts out well; a backlit, dark or blurred subject is a problem for any tool.

A window behind you is the most common mistake: turn around to face it.

Which background and clothes should you choose?

Choose a background that contrasts with you: light clothes on a dark wall, or the reverse. The more the colors differ, the better the AI separates the subject.

Avoid very fine patterns (tight stripes) and clothes the exact color of the wall. Loose, fine hair is the hardest part; tie it back if the look allows.

How should you frame the shot?

Leave room around the subject: an arm or head cut off by the frame edge is harder to track. For vertical video, frame from head to waist with space above.

Avoid objects between the camera and you (a mic stand in front of your face, a plant in the foreground). And think about the final background now: if you'll sit to the right of a slide, frame yourself slightly off-center, leaving room on the content side.

Do you need a tripod?

It's not essential, but a still camera helps: less motion blur, a stable background, sharper edges. A phone propped on a stack of books does the job.

If you move a lot (dance, sport), make up for it with more light; see cutting out pets and dance videos.

Which resolution and format should you use?

Film in 1080p or higher, in your publishing orientation (vertical for social). Keyotte processes up to 1080p: a 4K video is scaled down for processing.

Keep the original file rather than a copy sent through a messaging app, which gets recompressed. Accepted formats: MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, up to 10 minutes.

What are the most common shooting mistakes?

Backlight, motion blur and a subject cut off by the frame come up most. Then clothes the color of the wall and objects between camera and subject.

None of them is a deal-breaker, but each makes tracking and edges harder. Avoid them and you'll spend less time fixing.

How do you check before filming everything?

Film a 10-second test and run a free preview in Keyotte: you'll see right away whether edges and tracking hold up. You get 3 previews per video.

Then follow the full no-green-screen method; if you're still torn, read green screen vs AI.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a professional camera?

No. A recent phone with good light is enough in most cases.

Does a ring light help?

Yes, soft front light helps get clean outlines. Watch out for reflections in glasses.

Can I film in front of a window?

Avoid it: backlight darkens the subject and muddies the edges.

Does the wall color matter?

Yes: the more it differs from your clothes and hair, the cleaner the edges.
