Remove the background from an MP4 video
MP4 is the format of nearly every phone clip and social video. Good news: it's also what Keyotte takes in and hands back. Here's what to know about formats, going in and coming out.
Can you remove the background from an MP4 file?
Yes. Keyotte accepts MP4, MOV, MKV and WEBM videos of up to 10 minutes and processes them at up to 1080p. A bigger video, 4K for instance, is scaled down to 1080p for processing.
iPhone MOV files and Android MP4 files go straight in, with no conversion first. Orientation and length are kept: a vertical video stays vertical, and the sound stays in sync.
What file do you get at the end?
You get an H.264 MP4, up to 1080p, with your subject on flat green #00B140 and the original sound. No watermark.
It's about as compatible as video gets: it opens in CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, iMovie and on any phone.
Why can't an MP4 have a transparent background?
The H.264 codec, used by almost every MP4, doesn't store a transparency channel (alpha channel). Every pixel has a color; none of them is ever empty.
To keep transparency, you need other formats, such as ProRes 4444 or WebM with alpha. Keyotte doesn't export those; it gives you a green background your editor removes.
Does quality drop with an MP4?
MP4 is compressed, but flat green compresses very well and stays clean. What really hurts the result is recompression: sending the file through a messaging app, then importing that copy.
Keep the downloaded file as is and import it straight into your editor. If the green looks blotchy after a transfer, go back to the original.
How do you bring the green screen MP4 into your edit?
Import the downloaded file directly, place it above the background and apply the keying effect on the #00B140 green. Same method in every app; only the menu names change.
Step-by-step guides: CapCut, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. The audio is already in the file, in sync with the picture.
What if my video is longer than 10 minutes?
Keyotte doesn't process videos over 10 minutes. Split the video in your editor, or keep only the part where the background needs to change.
If what you actually want is short clips from a long video, that's the job of Clipotte, another Minibon tool.

Remove my video backgroundFrequently asked questions
Are iPhone HEVC videos accepted?
iPhone videos are usually MOV files, which are accepted. If a file can't be read, Keyotte tells you at upload.
Can I get a transparent MP4?
No, an H.264 MP4 can't keep transparency. That's why you work with a green background keyed out in the edit.
Does the video keep its length and sound?
Yes. The exported video has the same length and keeps the original audio.
What about vertical video?
Orientation is kept: a vertical video stays vertical, up to 1080 × 1920.
