How to cut out a person or object from a video

Cutting out means tracing a subject's outline to separate it from everything else. In video, that has to happen on every single frame. Here's how to do it in a few clicks, even with other people in the shot.

What does cutting out a video mean?

Cutting out a video means isolating one subject (a person, a pet, an object) from its background for the whole clip. What you're left with is the subject alone, ready to go on a new background.

The idea comes from photo editing, where you trace an outline with a pen tool. Video has 25 or 30 frames per second to handle, which is why automatic tracking matters.

How do you pick who to keep when several people are in the shot?

With Keyotte, you click the person to keep and only they stay: everyone else in the shot stays out. That's the difference with automatic tools, which usually keep everybody.

If a passer-by or a coworker gets picked up by mistake on a frame, switch to Remove mode and click them.

What if the tracking goes wrong mid-video?

Go to the frame where it slips, click the right subject (or remove the extra area), then run a preview around that frame. The fix carries through the tracking from there.

The tricky moments are well known: someone walks in front of the subject, the subject leaves the frame and comes back, or two people cross. Those are the frames to check first.

Can you cut out an object rather than a person?

Yes. You click the object just as you would a person: a product, a car, a pet. Tracking works best when the object has clear edges and stands out from the background.

For a product on white, see product videos on a white background; for a dog or a dance, cutting out pets and dance videos.

How long does cutting out a video take?

The full render usually takes a few minutes for a one-minute video, because every frame goes through a network that refines the edges. You can close the page; your video waits for you in My videos.

Clicking and previewing are quick: you see the mask on the clicked frame almost right away, then the tracking over 10 seconds. That's the time to spot tricky moments and fix them before the full export. To see what happens under the hood, read how AI background removal works.

What do you do with the cut-out video?

Import it into your editing app above the new background, then apply the green screen effect to remove the #00B140 green. CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut can all do it.

Step by step: change a video background, or go straight to CapCut.

Frequently asked questions

How many clicks does it take?

Two or three clicks on the subject usually do it. Add more on frames where the tracking goes wrong.

Can I keep two people?

Keyotte is built to follow the subject you point at. To be sure with two people, check the tracking on a free preview before paying.

Does it keep hair?

Edges are refined frame by frame, hair included. Very fine strands against a busy background are still the hardest part.

Do I need an account to try it?

No. A guest session is created in your browser; an account lets you find your videos on another device.
