DaVinci Resolve Magic Mask or an online cutout tool?

DaVinci Resolve's Magic Mask cuts out a person or object right inside your project, no green screen needed. It's an excellent tool, with conditions attached. Here's how to choose.

What is DaVinci Resolve's Magic Mask?

It's a DaVinci Resolve tool that cuts out a person or object with AI: you draw a stroke on the subject, and the mask follows it frame by frame. You then use the mask to isolate, grade or make the subject transparent.

People love it because it stays in the project: no export, no round trip between tools.

What do you need to use it?

You need an edition of DaVinci Resolve that includes it and a computer with a capable graphics card, since everything is computed locally. Historically, Magic Mask is part of DaVinci Resolve Studio, the paid version: check the feature list for your version.

On a modest machine, tracking a several-minute clip can take a while, and Resolve has to stay open throughout.

When is Magic Mask the best choice?

When you already work in Resolve, with the right edition and a powerful machine, and want to refine the mask by hand right away. Nothing beats a tool built into your own project.

It's also ideal for jobs a green screen can't do: grading just a face, or isolating an object for an effect.

When is an online tool like Keyotte more practical?

When you don't have the edition that includes Magic Mask, your computer is too slow, or you edit in another app. Keyotte computes on its servers: a browser is enough, even on a phone.

You click the subject, check a free 10-second preview (3 per video), then get an MP4 up to 1080p on green, with the sound, which you key in DaVinci or in Premiere.

Are the results equivalent?

Both rely on AI tracking guided by you, with refined edges. The result mostly depends on the footage: light, contrast, motion blur.

The practical difference is elsewhere: Magic Mask gives you a mask inside your Resolve project, Keyotte a green screen file any editor can read. If you switch tools or work with someone who doesn't use Resolve, the green screen file travels more easily.

What does each option cost?

Magic Mask comes with the Resolve edition that includes it; we haven't checked its price. Keyotte is paid per video: €1.99 up to 1 minute, €4.99 up to 5 minutes, €9.99 up to 10 minutes.

If you cut out a lot and already own Resolve Studio, Magic Mask pays for itself. For a one-off, see what you really pay.
