Remove a video background without a green screen

No need to hang a green sheet in your living room. AI can separate the subject from the background in footage shot anywhere, and hand you a virtual green screen. Here's the method, from shooting to keying.

Can you really remove a background without a green screen?

Yes. AI cutout tools find the subject frame by frame and work out its edges, hair included, without needing a colored backdrop. The result mostly depends on your source footage: light, contrast and sharpness.

A real green screen is still more reliable for long shoots or live streams, but for a short clip shot on a phone, AI does the job in most cases. The full face-off is in green screen vs AI.

How should you film for a clean cutout?

Light the subject well, avoid backlight and pick a background that contrasts with them. The more the subject stands out, the cleaner the edges.

All the details, from clothes to phone settings, are in how to film for background removal.

  • Light from the front or the side, not a window behind you.
  • Clothes in a different color from the wall behind.
  • Phone steady (propped up or on a tripod) to limit motion blur.
  • Hair tied back if you can: fine strands are the hardest part.

How do you cut out the video with Keyotte?

Upload your video, click the person or object to keep, and run a preview. If the tracking gets it wrong on a frame, go to that frame and click the right subject, or switch to Remove mode on the extra area.

You get 3 free 10-second previews per video. When you're happy, you pay for the export: the full video as an MP4 up to 1080p, on flat green, with the sound.

Why does Keyotte give you green rather than transparency?

Because an MP4 on green opens in every app and on every phone, and survives being copied around. A transparent video depends on the format and the app, and often ends up with a black background.

Your editor keys out that green in seconds, exactly as if you'd shot on a real green screen, minus the shadows and fabric creases.

How do you add the new background?

In your editing app, put your new background on the bottom track and the green screen clip above it. Apply the green screen, chroma key or keying effect to the top clip and pick the #00B140 green.

CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut all have this effect. The CapCut walkthrough is in CapCut green screen.

How much does it cost?

With Keyotte, you pay per video: €1.99 up to 1 minute, €4.99 up to 5 minutes, €9.99 up to 10 minutes. No subscription, no watermark, and new renders after a fix are free.

Export price : €1.99

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a powerful computer?

No. The cutout runs on our servers: a browser is enough, on a computer or a phone.

How long does processing take?

It depends on length and resolution, because every frame goes through a network that refines the edges. Allow a few minutes for a one-minute video; you can close the page meanwhile.

Does it work with several people in the shot?

Yes: you click the one to keep, and the others stay out.

What if I'm not happy with the result?

You check before paying thanks to the previews. After paying, you can request a refund from your account within 14 days, explaining the problem.
